Beautiful big square. It is surrounded by beautiful Palaces and the beautiful Chiesa Rettoriale di San Polo. The name of the campo (square) derivative from the twisting of San Paolo, it is second in dimension only to Saint Marks Square, it represents the fulcrum of Sestiere di San Polo one of the oldest of all city. The square has a long-standing history with a whole range of different uses over the years. Long time ago before it was paved it was used as pasture and for cultivation and then lately as market place (quite famous during 600). During this century the “campo” was used as an playing arena, games as “masked ball” or the “bullfight,” and various tournaments were held. The games were suppressed in 1611 and inside the homonymous church it is still visible the plate which proclaimed the prohibition. After the 17th century the poor's market was moved from here on Piazza San Marco.The history of the square report also many vicissitude, legend and episodes, an example is the death of Lorenzino De Medici assassinated here in 1548. It is a very characteristic district because of the presence of a lot of “house and workshop”, that are places where people live and work, and also for the huge variety of typical venetian taverns that are called “bacari”.
Quite nice place, but full of pidgeons and sellers trying to sell o roses or other things.
