Reviews from visitors:
I wanted to love it because it was a really special spot - you’ve seen the pics. But the staff’s attitude was incredibly disheartening. I travel alone often, enjoy making friends and being mindful of my little moments and the energy around me. It’s one reason I wanted to stay here, I wanted a peaceful and welcoming experience. But multiple times as I wandered exploring the property during my stay I was stopped and asked by staff who I was and why I was there. I found it all quite obnoxious and alienating and ended up spending most of my vacation elsewhere, returning there just to sleep. Love tulum for lots of reasons. This landed in the other column.
I stayed at Holistika in December 2020. I was very excited to stay there and loved the grounds, my room etc. The food was fresh and delicious. Most of the staff was kind, however I had a very disheartening experience which is why I would not visit again. I was in a yoga class that was comprised of all Black women and had a racist and sexist experience with one of the instructors. His name is Memo. He rudely barged into our class, proceeded to yell at our instructor, and disrespect our class. He threw yoga mats and spewed toxic masculine and privileged energy. I was appalled and disappointed that someone in a "healing/yoga" role would behave in this manner. I'm certain that he would not act this way if the instuctor/students were white and/or male. The wellness manager apologized profusely for this instructor's actions as the mix up was on their part, but Memo never parted his lips to apologize to us for his disturbing actions. I'm sure he still works there and was never reprimanded. This experience totally destroyed the positive and peaceful vibe that I gained throughout my wellness retreat. Sadly, I must warn other women and people of color that this establishment turns a blind eye to incidents such as this. I spent a good amount of my hard earned money to stay at Holiska and I won't spend another dime there.
I received a great deal with my room but it was almost as if I was treated as such. My sheets were stinky and I asked them to replace them but they were still stinky.. almost like mildew. I had to sleep with my own blanket over the bed.
The staff, except for the woman who checked me in, was anything less than exceptional.
The food was hit or miss. Tacos were fantastic and the Arabic pizza was terrible. It was always an awkward experience getting change back from the restaurant. They would ask to keep a 30-40% tip for subpar service.
The property is undeniably beautiful and dreamy.
The manager is not welcoming, friendly, or helpful. After speaking with a few guests I wasn't the only one that received the same treatment. The girls at the wellness center aren't very welcoming either. They assume you don't speak Spanish or understand and make rude and insulting remarks. I took a vinyasa class the women instructor made it a point to tell me in front of the whole class that I wasn't doing a position correctly. She could have calmly and quietly helped me. It's unfortunate because this place should be a peaceful and safe space. They should treat everyone with respect even if someone doesn't look like you especially paying guests.
I did the temezcal ceremony here which was such a beautiful and unique experience. I didn’t know what to expect abs this blew my mind. The shaman Memo was incredible, spiritual and knowledgeable and made the experience so magical. It is a challenging experience and not for the faint hearted so be advised. If you’re looking for a special temezcal ceremony look no further
