I’ve been a tenant at Spaces Surry Hills for 2 years, renting a single desk in a shared 6 person office (empty except for me due to unrealistic rents!) so my review is very informed. Initially things were fine and the space itself is still great, but the company that runs it (Regus) are underhanded crooks. They are just after bottom line growth and the brand has been tarnished beyond repair due to unconscionable business practices. Other tenants I’ve spoken to feel the same way. I’ve dealt with other co-working companies who are wonderful to deal with and fair but Spaces is ruthless.
When COVID hit, like many businesses mine was hit hard. As my lease had expired at the end of March, I gave a month’s notice on 30 April to vacate end of May, but was told my agreement had “auto-renewed” and if I tried to leave before the end of the “new 6-month agreement” (which included a 20% rent increase) they would “send debt collectors” to collect the full remaining 4 months rent! This is despite the fact that I could easily vacate my small desk in an empty room within 20 minutes without a trace and they could rent it to someone else in an hour.
I learned that 4 months prior on 1 Jan, Spaces automatically initiated a new agreement (3 months in advance and less than 2 months after I signed my original agreement) without any discussion with me. They did this on because I failed to respond to an email sent late Dec, when I was on holiday. They say this is standard protocol even though previous renewals always included discussions and signed agreements.
Anyway, after I mentioned the government’s COVID mandate and pleaded that I had no income and no need for the desk, they offered me a “one-month discount for COVID relief”. I resented the rent increase (which was auto-deducted) and being locked into a new agreement without discussion, but was grateful to get a free month so I accepted. However, a week later I was told the offer was no longer valid because I had “terminated my agreement” - when I gave notice on 30 April - prior to receiving their offer! Even though they also told me I couldn’t terminate!!
Since then I've been trying to get the free month’s rent, writing endless emails and in repetitive discussions with 8 different overseas “team members” who barely speak English and conclude with “I’ll speak with Management”. Finally I was given a face-to-face meeting in late July (after asking for 3 months) which I thought resolved everything, but today I got an email saying “the application of rent relief extension you have requested has been unsuccessful. The two offers that were made were non negotiable and only applicable to the time frame of May and June. Unfortunately the offer has expired and is no longer available in any capacity”!
And on July 24 they added an additional month’s rent to my account as a penalty!!! All this is all over $1000 and one small desk in an empty office!!! Don’t ever get involved with Spaces or Regus.
Had a meeting room booked for 2:30 only to find that there was no one at reception. Arrive 15 minutes early to set up, tried calling the number (they had the phone muted) and eventually had to start the meeting in a booth. Staff eventually came and were quite rude and dismissive - luckily the client was understanding.
We had a booking for 10am and the desk attendant didn't turn up until 20 minutes into it, had to start our meeting 20 minutes late. Head office is also a nightmare to deal with.
Amazing place to work at! And the staff is so nice!
Spaces Surry Hills is a great place to work. What might be even better is Suzie Q around the corner but you can't work there all day. They serve great food and coffee.
