Reviews from visitors:
Our daughter attends OCHS, new to the area in 2015 joined as a freshman, thriving as a JR. The administration does an amazing job. This pubic school rivals top private institutions. The kids are welcoming, teachers open minded and challenging. Great decision for our family.
My son is a student at OCHS and it is one of the best schools around, the teachers are great and my son loves going there.
Bullying is the main problem in this school ..it's who you are that will get the right attention and I'm going back to 1990 to present nothing has changed still all being swept under the rug. It's never their fault because they didn't know or is it because they don't want to hear?
My alma mater a while back. Great memories. This is a public high school and definitely comes with all the current issues that we see across this nation. They do a very good job educating the students if you are on the upper level gpa. They seem to be more concerned with thier ranking and pushing students into Advanced courses so they can rank higher and the lower gpa students suffer from it. Sports and extra curriculars are good but way to much emphasis on them for my taste. Overall a very good school if your student is highly motivated and a bright student. If, I would seek other options.
Another student took their own life, that's three in the past four school years Faculty, in case you've lost count.
It's all well and good that there are grief counselors who are experienced to offer support to students but of course they're experienced with this happening at the frequency it has. You churn out your generic letter of sadness time and again but nothing changes.
Children need to feel safe at school but the only true safety they'll get IME is to get homeschooled online where they won't be blamed into believing the bullying is somehow their own fault if they are brave enough to speak up, which is exactly what happens there.
My advice for anyone who feels bullied there is to tell your parents. Parents, believe your children.
If the school does nothing, which they probably won't, lawyer up. Don't get a local lawyer because they probably know someone like they all do at that school. Even the bullies know someone, that's why they get away with it. Find someone a few counties away.
My children have graduated and are on to bigger and better things now but if I could go back and do it again that'd be what I would do, because while it's the safest option for the child to be removed from that environment it's certainly not ideal. Our children deserve to be safe in their school. That's "excellence".
This latest tragedy as well as the others is heartbreaking but could have been prevented had the ones we entrust our children to actually cared instead of just saying they do.
