Reviews from visitors:
Stayed for one night for a birthday celebration, as I have wanted to stay here for years. Absolutely beautiful building. The room was spacious, bed was comfortable, and everything worked. The shower grout could use an update but the room was otherwise clean. Dinner at the Cascades was delicious, with slower but pleasant service. The grounds were cool even in winter, we experienced quite a few deer.
The problem came at 6-7am, when we woke to the sound of hammering non-stop. The room below was under construction (238). It rattled our bed even. I tried and failed to sleep before giving up by 8. The front desk response was that they would let management know. And that they could hear it down there as well. Wow. That was it. It marred what would have been an excellent stay. Now we are exhausted for our 3 hour drive. If you stay, ask about construction, as this is a historic hotel and you will hear and feel every thud nearby.
HISTORY IS HERE. A MUST SEE
Leaving this review because of the poor gift shop customer service.
I'm currently in bed at the Stanley hotel as of this writing. My wife, daughter, and I have traveled to several places across a few states on this trip of ours, and have an early departure time from our one night stay at the Stanley Hotel. This was a big highlight on the vacation. She was unaware of the stay....I surprised her with it for her birthday.
We booked a tour of the hotel (which was fantastic! Our tour guide was named Jim and he was great!), but at the end of the tour the time was approaching 6:00pm. We went to the gift shop only to find the lady working closing up shop. This was a few minutes before the official closing time of 6:00pm. I asked if it was too late and she replied yes, and offered nothing else but an unfriendly demeanor. I explained our situation and that we were leaving early in the morning before the shop would be open again (opens at 9:00am). She did not care. I asked if the same items could be purchased online and she stated that they could be (this was accurate with the exception of one item).
My family and I returned to our room where my wife began shopping for the items she wanted online. She was initially disappointed that she could not shop for the items at the hotel and take them with us, but quickly got over it.
My wife picked out 3 items and found shipping was going to be $24. At this point she refused to buy the souvenirs she wanted based on principal. Her stance (and I agree) is that we are at the hotel and went to the shop before closing. So paying for shipping (Especially $24 for the 3 small items that didn't cost much more) was unreasonable.
We enjoyed everything else, but this one experience has left us with a "bad taste in our mouths". Especially with the premium paid to stay in the historical Stanley hotel.
Thanks for the tour Jim!
This hotel was something else! Wow, so much history right in this place. I recommend just driving up, going to the bar, and grabbing a drink. Take it all in and walk around to the different areas—just a great experience, especially for Jim Carey fans and his history here. I recommend everyone to at least drive by and snap a pic of history! The views are really nice as well! Great break while heading to the Rockies.
To clarify this review references lunch at the hotel yesterday (7/23/20). If you visit the Hotel's web site it implies that lunch is available at the formal Cascades restaurant , a beautiful dining room with crisp white tablecloths and a delicious looking menu. That is why my wife and I made the 3 hour and 130 mile trip from Breckenridge for a day out and lunch. Unfortunately in reality lunch is only available in the Whiskey bar from an overpriced limited menu. Furthermore the food was terrible! I ordered the Smoked trout croquettes ($16) presuming this was an entree sized dish. When the tiny morsels arrived all 3 of them, little globes perhaps an inch in diameter, tasteless and comprised predominately of potato with just a hint of trout. My wife fared no better, she had ordered the Mcgregor's Burger ($24) which was allegedly accompanied with truffle fries and onion rings. The Burger and onion rings were cold and very greasy, furthermore she could find no evidence of any truffle flavor. We ate because we were hungry (the journey having taken much longer than anticipated) but the food was barely edible. All the while we were eating there was a constant flow of people (not customer's of the bar) scrutinizing the movie memorabilia on the wall behind our table, some even taking photographs, very annoying!. We had such high expectations for this beautiful storied old hotel, and what a disappointing experience! The cost for our lunch comprising of trout Croquettes , burger, a side of fries, glass of wine and a coke $68 plus tip, around $81 all in. We could have eaten better at Burger King for the price of the tip. Save your money and eat anywhere else in Estes Park, I wish we had.
