Reviews from visitors:
Majestic ecletic building, Selina Lapa is a result of a gorgeous refurbishment devolving all dignity to this amazing 19 century building deserves, turming it into a trendy elegant hotel, hostel, working area, meeting point at Lapa. Appealing to a mix clientele, ageless lovers of old and new things. Offers collective kitchen, library, terrace and wifi. Of course exquisite views of the archs of Lapa not mentioning the internal views of the building. A must stay or at least a visit.
The location is good. Just the homeless could scare some. But it's not dangerous. Rooftop has nothing special. Party not my taste. Kitchen is bad! Many things are missing and very dirty! Rooms are fine. Staff friendly! A bit of a hotel style with bar and restaurant.
Best hotel / hostel we stayed at in Brazil! Well located in central Rio / lap right beside the famous staircase. We didn’t have breakfast included but it was tasty...at the weekends though the cafe need extra staff on as it igets incredibly busy in the morning time. After 45 mins waiting to just order breakfast we had to leave one morning!
Great location but impossible to contact and bad service. I was looking for a coworking space, tried contacting them about hours through their website, by calling, and by email. No responses.
When I showed up, the entire coworking space ended up being rented out to a company and unavailable, while it's still available on the website. Also, no coffee this morning and spotty wifi.
This seems to be an ongoing issue with Selina hostels, as I've had issues with a Selina in Panamá as well. I'll be looking for other coworking hostels in the future.
The service is really poor and slow. I emailed them multiple times before my arrival about how to get to the hostel due to carnival and roads being blocked - they never responded. Other people here have also said the service has been terrible for them too; at the front desk and at the bar.
Do not use their website for booking shuttle transfers. The booking goes through but doesnt actually go through to anyone so then you're not actually booked in for your transfer at all. I missed the time I wanted to depart to Ilha Grande because of this and 5 days after my booking the transfer online decided to ask the staff about it and they even said theres no point booking online as no one receives it.
There is no soap in any of the shared bathrooms/toilets including the dorms. Its carnival and things can get grosse so soap is really something basic that would create a much cleaner environment. Some of the private rooms have soap which is interesting as they're not sharing with 8 pairs of hands.
The place is a big hostel with more of a hotel vibe. The occasional bands are nice though
Lapa is a dodgy area with lots of stories of hotel guests getting robbed. The hostel has decent security but I've heard of a few people getting bags stolen.
Do not drink the water from the filter in the kitchen. Given it is a filter a few of us thought it was safe to drink but we all got sick from it.
I notified the hostel 2 weeks before the date of my arrival (and well within my free cancellation period) to move my date of arrival back one day. Sometimes they responded yes its all confirmed, other times they said it hasn't been done yet - in the end I had to pay for the extra night despite all my contact and notice I had given them. They run such a big business and still care about ripping off an individual.
