The narrow streets by the canal are a great place to walk and observe life on the other side.
I thought it might be seedy but it isn't. I think it's kind of sad that a lot of people have chosen that way of life for whatever reason.
Trust me you may be shocked but you can see people from all walks of life behind a window. It's upto you if you choose to go inside.
A tip for you regarding personal belongings don't flaunt it and don't film what you see in the windows they do not like it. After all it isn't a zoo.
You will be offered drugs at some point while you are walking around. What I find interesting in the cannabis cafes is you can smoke cannabis inside but if you want a normal cigarette you have to stand outside. People go to experiment it's not for me but I don't judge.

Amsterdam a beautiful place to visit. Lovely friendly locals, can't do enough for you. We were used to Netherlands due to living in Army quarters in Germany and visiting regularly. Once out we went to Amsterdam for a Xmas holiday and to enjoy the barges. Beware, the canals readily freeze over in the winter so that can put paid to that idea. You can have a great time either walking or bussing through the red light district - you certainly have your eyes opened. Well worth it for a different enjoyable holiday in a very clean friendly country.
